Handling Criticism

Let's face it, criticism is a part of living and growing. Sometimes it comes in the form of an off-handed comment, a slap in the face or as a reality check (sometimes all at the same time). Add to that the promise of the higher up you are on the leadership food chain the better your chances of being the target of criticism. How we handle and process criticism is very important in our development as leaders.

Tim Elmore in "Habitudes vol.2" offers some suggestions in handling criticism:

a. Understand the difference between constructive and destructive criticism.

b. Recognize that people act out what they are experiencing inside. It may not be about you.

c. Remember that good people get criticized.

d. Don't see the critic, see the crowd.

e. Eat the fish and spit out the bones.

f. Trust God and wait for time to prove them wrong.

g. Act, don't react. Don't get defensive.

h. Seek wise counsel from others.

i. Concentrate on your mission; change your mistakes.
